Night of the storm
On the night of the Storm, Sab decides to save Enrique. I do not believe that he should have. He does so because Carlota sent him as his protector and he believes that Carlota would fault him if Enrique died. Carlota may have originally blamed Sab for Enrique's death but if Sab had insisted that the fallen tree killed him she would eventually forgive him and just hold Enrique in loving memory. Instead Sab decides to save Enrique and for the rest of the book despises him. Sab can not make up his mind throughout the book whether he dislikes Enrique or loves Carlota more. At one point he switches the lottery tickets out of love for Carlota to let the two marry and live happily. At others he is plotting against Sab which would also hurt Carlota. In the end Sab reveals Enrique and writes the letter to Carlota. In doing so, he brings a realization down on her and destroys her picture of Enrique. Had he killed Sab in the beginning of the book, Carlota would have eventually gotten over his death and Enrique would have died in loving memory. Instead Carlota is heartbroken and Enrique is revealed for what he really is

I agree with you to some extent Oliver in saying that Sab should have saved Enrique’s life, but at the same time, if he hadn’t, Carlota would always love Enrique for the rest of her life, or at least the Enrique she knew in her head. But, I don’t think that Sab is undecided as to whether he dislikes Enrique or loves Carlota more. I think that he is just frustrated because things are not going the way he wants them to. Sab definitely dislikes Enrique and thinks he’s trash; he also loves Carlota deeply and passionately. But, he wants to find that best possible way for Carlota to realize who Enrique really is and how much Sab loves her.
Sab is frustrated because if he kills Enrique, as you said earlier, Carlota would never really realize who Enrique really was. But, at the same time, if Sab does not kill Enrique, Carlota would stay with Enrique, or at least the picture of Enrique she had in her head. Sab gets more and more frustrated throughout the book to the point that he was willing to sacrifice Carlota’s happiness with Enrique to be with her and finally, Sab lets out his frustration by writing that letter at the end of the book and it is in that letter that Carlota realizes that truth in the situation.
I agree with you in some sense Oliver, however I almost feel that Sab not killing Enrique was the right thing to do. Had he killed Enrique, Carlota probably would never love again. She was described as this pure and overly sensitive girl who would have been eternally attached to Enrique whether he was alive or dead. Also, had Sab killed Enrique, he would have committed a crime that would break the true love he had for Carlota. His love was so pure, that he would never do anything that would make his love sad; he could never break her heart intentionally. Sab probably also figures eventually that Carlota could never love him as he loves her because of his status and race. That is why he gives her the lottery ticket. He has given up. He realized that there was nothing he could do to get this girl to love him, so why kill an innocent soul and break his love's heart. Sab had several opportunities to kill Enrique, and I believe that he made the correct choice by not killing Enrique.
Whether Sab kills Enrique at the very beginning or he writes a letter to Carlota explaining Enrique's intentions, Carlota is going to be heartbroken. But I believe that its better for her to know the truth and be in pain rather than suddenly losing the person who she would have died for.
Carlota did mention a few times that she would have not lived on if Enrique died, so perhaps she would have killed herself if Sab had killed Enrique on that stormy night. Not to mention Sab would feel guilty for...about eternity. Its obvious that his love for Carlota overpowers his hatred for Enrique (one example being the lottery ticket fiasco), so he definetly made the right decision to keep Enrique alive. I think Sab was also waiting for Carlota to discover that Enrique was a jerk.
I disagree that Sab would have been better off if Enrique had died. He had a good chance to kill, but was unable to do so due to the person that he is. Not only for humanitarian purposes does he not kill her, but he believes that Carlota would find out Enrique's true identity by herself. If Sab had killed him, then Carlota would forever idolize Enrique as the man of her dreams, and never see him for what he truly is. Even though this does not happen, there seemed to be a chance that it could (at least in Sab's eyes). By saying that Sab should have killed him you would have future information that Sab in this very moment does not possess. All that Sab can do is use the information that is in hand in the present to make the best decision for the future. Furthermore, if he had killed Enrique he still would believe that he could never be with Carlota due to his inner struggle as a previous slave. Even though Sab was freed, he still looks at himself as subordinate to Carlota and not worthy of her love.
I suppose my question is, is sab wrong to write the letter? There is a choice that sab had to make by not revealing enrique and letting them live happily ever after. it is easy to take the side of sab in this situation because he is not only th victim but the book is in some way revolved around him...seeing as his name is the title. the entire audience wants so badly for carlota to see sab as an equal so she can love him throughout the entire book. Everybody hate enrique because he is the corrupter of carlota and has little to zero integrity it seems.
all of these things makes me want to kill enrique myself, or banish him or reveal him. Sab has every riht to feel the same way but i feel like thinking objectively he is in the wrong. While enrique should be revealed, sab made a conscious decision to wait. by prolonging the whole process and trying to do the right thing he made it much worse and at that point he should have found another way. i guess i'm trying to say that he had his chance and by doing it late he just ended up hurting.
